Analysis of emotions can be difficult because -obviously- we are wrapped up in them. Take a lesson from music: we can enjoy music, feel it lifting us up, making us sob, or energize us, etc. We can also analyze the underlying structure of the musical composition to understand how certain use of pitches and their relationship trigger our feelings. There it is: If we can analyze music for its emotional impact, then we can begin to analyze our past, present or future environments and the relationships that drive our emotions. We can explore what makes us feel without the need to relive, just like the composer who analyzes and understands music, without needing to feel. We can guide and support our own emotional journey by understanding. Is that not liberating?
